►THE VOCATION AND MISSION OF THE FAMILY
IN THE CHURCH AND CONTEMPORARY WORLD
At the request of Pope Francis, Bishops from around the world gathered in Rome in October 2014 to discuss “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization.” At the conclusion of the 2014 Synod of Bishops, the Vatican released a final report (linked above and used as the Lineamenta for the 2015 Synod) containing a summary of the Bishops discussions.
Pope Francis had determined that this “Extraordinary Synod” would be followed by an “Ordinary Synod” to discuss “The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World.”
This XIV Ordinary General Assembly will take place in Rome from Sunday, October 4- Sunday, October 25, 2015. Working with and under the Pope, the Bishops will be seeking ways to communicate the important role of the family, and to offer support to married couples and families.
The ongoing work of the Synod is intended to be a rethinking with renewed freshness and enthusiasm of what revelation, transmitted in the Church's faith, tells us about the beauty, the role and the dignity of the family. This period of reflection and response prior to the upcoming Ordinary Synod is, as Pope Francis has noted, a path of "spiritual and pastoral discernment."
